Statement by the United States Embassy on Freedom of Expression & Assembly - Fanambarana avy amin’ny Masoivoho Amerikana

The United States is troubled by the violent suppression of a political demonstration by the de facto regime and security forces loyal to them. The roadmap and international human rights treatises enshrine the freedom of expression and the freedom of assembly, including political dissent, as fundamental rights of any citizen. Similar such incidents were noted in our Human Rights Report last year. We remain concerned by the climate of fear, intimidation, and violence which has continued to increase as a result of the current political crisis. We remind all political factions to respect fundamental human rights - including the freedom of expression and the freedom of assembly- as protected under Malagasy and International law.
