Press Statement on the Meeting with Malagasy Political Leaders

Following the SADC Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government held on 01 June 2012 in Luanda, Republic of Angola, the Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defense and Security Cooperation and President of the Republic of South Africa, H.E Jacob Zuma, in consultation with the Organ Troika, convened a meeting between H.E. Andry Rajoelina, the President of the Transition and H.E. former President Marc Ravalomanana in the Republic of Seychelles from the 24th to the 25th July 2012.



The meeting took place within the context of ensuring full implementation of the Roadmap aimed at ending the crisis in the Republic of Madagascar. Before commencing the meeting, H.E President Jacob Zuma, observed a moment of silence in respect of the death of H.E Atta Mills, the late President of the Republic of Ghana.  In attendance was H.E James Michel, President of the Republic of Seychelles and host of the meeting.

In this regard, the meeting was held in a peaceful and serene environment on Desroches Island, Seychelles, hosted by the Government of the Republic of Seychelles.  Discussions were cordial and the participants displayed good leadership. All the parties were satisfied with the progress that had been made in bringing H.E Andry Rajoelina and H.E Marc Ravalomanana together in search for a lasting political solution in Madagascar. The presence of the two leaders was a clear indication of their commitment towards finding a lasting solution to end the political crisis in the country.

During the meeting it was agreed that the two leaders should reconvene to conclude on the outstanding issues stemming from the implementation of the Roadmap in order to report to the Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government.

The meeting expressed gratitude to H.E President James Michel, the Government, and the people of the Republic of Seychelles for their generosity and hospitality.

Après le Sommet de la SADC extraordinaire des chefs d'Etat et de gouvernement tenue le 01 Juin 2012 à Luanda, République d'Angola, le Président de l'Organe sur la Politique, la Défense et de la coopération de sécurité et le Président de la République d'Afrique du Sud, SE Jacob Zuma, en consultation avec la troïka de l'Organe, a convoqué une réunion entre SE Andry Rajoelina, le président de la Transition et SE l'ancien président Marc Ravalomanana dans la République des Seychelles du 24 au 25 Juillet 2012.



La réunion a eu lieu dans le contexte de mise en œuvre intégrale de la Feuille de route visant à mettre fin à la crise dans la République de Madagascar. Avant de commencer la réunion, SE le Président Jacob Zuma, a observé une minute de silence à l'égard de la mort de SE Atta Mills, l'ancien Président de la République du Ghana. En présence était SEM James Michel, président de la République des Seychelles et d'accueil de la réunion.



À cet égard, la réunion a eu lieu dans un environnement paisible et serein, le Desroches Island, Îles Seychelles, accueillie par le Gouvernement de la République des Seychelles. Les discussions ont été cordiales et les participants ont manifesté un bon leadership. Toutes les parties ont été satisfaits des progrès qui avaient été réalisés dans la mise SE Andry Rajoelina et Marc Ravalomanana ensemble à la recherche d'une solution politique durable à Madagascar. La présence des deux chefs était une indication claire de leur engagement en vue de trouver une solution durable pour mettre fin à la crise politique dans le pays.



Au cours de la réunion, il a été convenu que les deux dirigeants devraient se réunir pour conclure sur les questions en suspens découlant de la mise en œuvre de la Feuille de route afin de faire rapport au Sommet ordinaire des Chefs d'Etat et de gouvernement.



La réunion a exprimé sa gratitude à SE le Président James Michel, le Gouvernement et le peuple de la République des Seychelles pour leur générosité et leur hospitalité.
